Specialist external restoration of a Grade II Listed Victorian terrace in South Kensington, delivering heritage-compliant masonry repairs, leadwork, and decorative finishes in accordance with RBKC Local Authority specifications.
Project Overview
Situated in one of London's most prestigious residential squares, 36 Onslow Gardens is a prime example of mid-19th-century Victorian architecture. As a Grade II Listed building, any remedial work requires a meticulous approach to preserve the historical fabric and aesthetic uniformity of the terrace. Our team was contracted to perform essential external repairs and a full decorative overhaul, ensuring the building remains protected and visually stunning for decades to come.
The Challenge
The primary challenge was balancing the need for modern structural protection with the stringent Local Authority Specifications set out by the council. Every material used — from the lime mortar to the specific shade of masonry paint — had to meet heritage standards to maintain the architectural integrity of the Onslow Gardens conservation area.
Masonry & Brickwork Remediation
We carried out expert repairs to the traditional brickwork and decorative stonework, employing specialist mortar mixes formulated for compatibility with the original 19th-century substrate. Every repair was executed to be structurally sound while remaining visually indistinguishable from the surrounding historic fabric.
Roofing, Leadwork & Specialist Decoration
Essential remedial repairs were made to the roofing system to ensure a completely watertight finish, including inspection and repair of traditional lead flashings and guttering to prevent future water ingress. All exterior stonework and stucco received a complete preparation and decoration programme, with traditional timber sash windows meticulously sanded, primed, and painted using high-performance breathable coatings — all applied in strict accordance with the council's local specification for heritage assets.
The Result
The project was completed to an exacting standard, meeting all council requirements and securing the building's future. The combination of structural repairs and a fresh, historically accurate aesthetic has returned the property to its former glory, providing the client with peace of mind that the building is protected against the elements. 36 Onslow Gardens now stands as a benchmark for heritage conservation in the South Kensington conservation area.
